Seeking Hosts for the next IMC

Seeking Hosts for the next IMC

The Commission on Monogenetic Volcanism is calling for host institutions for the next International Monogenetic Conference.

Deadline for submission is 1 March, 2026

Applications must be submitted electronically to marie @ igeofisica.unam.mx and bemis @ marine.rutgers.edu

The International Monogenetic Conferences (IMC) are the successor series to the International Maar Conferences which ran from 2000 to 2018 and were co-sponsored by the IAVCEI-CMV and the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS). In line with the aims of the Commission, the goal of the new IMC series will be to provide a forum for researchers to define and understand the phenomena of small volume magmatic systems and their surface expression as monogenetic volcanoes and/or volcanic fields.
The Commission intends for the new IMC to be held approximately every two to four years, while avoiding competition with the major IAVCEI conferences. Each conference should last about 5 days including an intra-meeting field trip. There should also be a selection of pre- and post-conference field trips offered, emphasizing monogenetic volcanism. Strong efforts should be made to facilitate attendance by early career researchers and participants from low-income countries (note that the IAVCEI may provide grants to support this).

The IMC is also the venue for awarding the Jim Luhr award for career achievements on research in monogenetic volcanism. Created in memory of Ph.D. James F Luhr (1957-2007) and his passion for monogenetic volcanoes, it was first awarded in 2008. The hosts of the IMC would need to include plans for this award in their proposal.

We thank you very much for your interest in contributing to the efforts of the commission to create and sustain a vivid community of researchers on monogenetic volcanism.
